Back to School - Online Student Tips

Being a college student can be tough. Doing it fully online is even more challenging. Now that I've been doing it for awhile, I have a few tips to share for online students.

  1. Stay Organized
I know you've probably heard this tip 1,000 times, but it's key. Especially when most classes are now 8 weeks instead of 16. Each person has their own way to stay organized. Once you find your niche, stick to it!

  1. Get Books ASAP
If you're books aren't going to be sent to you, order them 2-3 before classes start. There are so many factors that could cause a delay in reviving them, that it's worth it to get them early.

  1. Take Advantage of preview week!
Most schools offer preview week for online students. This allows you to get a peek into what will be due for the course, as well as a look at the syllabus. Preview week is also the time to ask any questions about things that look confusing.

  1. Ask Questions
Mask as many questions as you need to! Take advantage of help forums. If those don't answer your question, email your professor ASAP & give the allotted time for an answer. Each school has its own rules regarding this.

  1. Use the Writing Center
Most online programs offer a writing center. Having someone else check your work after you write it can help bring your grade up more than you expected. Finishing assignments ahead of time are is the way to go.

  1. Give Yourself Time to Relax
Being an online student can make it easy for you to want to work 24/7 on assignments. Take it from someone who's been doing online for awhile now. Make sure to take the amount of breaks you need. Without them, you'll end up burning out fast.

Colossians 3:17 (ESV)
17 And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Life Lessons from Coffee Chats

Today I had an unnamed person (we’ll call Jane) ask me if I wanted coffee. At first, I kindly declined. A little while later she asked me a 2nd time. However, this time I could tell she wanted more than me to just have a cup of coffee. ☕️  She wanted me to spend the time with her it took to drink that cup of coffee to talk with me. To ask me questions, learn about something she had been wondering about and gain better insight into a particular situation.  I think that’s why in the American culture when someone asks us to coffee, it’s either a quick yes or no answer because maybe we don’t want to spend time asking deeper questions of someone.  Our motivations might be different in each scenario but what if we said yes to coffee more often even if it’s not convenient for us? We might have assumptions or fears surrounding the other person’s motives. However, there’s no better way to gain clarity about them than asking vs assuming.  Trust me. It’s wayyyy easier said than done but in the l

Real Talk - Honor

Honor: Verb: regard with great respect  To be honest, I wasn’t ready sure what to write about this week. Everyone is talking about New Years resolutions, goals they’re setting, & what they want to do with the time they have this year.  Then it got me to thinking. What if we make resolutions to leave others better off than we find them? If they mistreat us, let’s teach them how to treat us right. If they do good to us, let’s applaud them.  It won’t be easy, but if we do it together & give it our best, we all will be better for it.  Reminder:  9  Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast  to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor . Romans 2:9-10 ESV Challenge:  Choose 1 person this week to honor.
