Why I Volunteer For Adventures In Odyssey

I get asked a lot why I volunteer for AIO.

I thought I’d write the long story here, as face to face I usually don’t have as much time to go in depth.

I’ve been listening for as long as I can remember. So much so, that I can usually identify an episode before a full 10 seconds are played. I would beg to listen to it as soon as I heard the car start. Although, what really sticks out to me, are all the times I’d listen to it before doctors appointments or during surgery recovery.

Many of you that know me, know I had a lot of health issues growing up. Specifically, unknown ones. Which resulted in more time at the doctors office than I could count. As well as pokes & tests I wasn’t fond of.

Odyssey always kept my mind off of that, as I loved the stories and the sound design that goes along with them. Every time I listen to an episode over again, I always hear something new!

Learning To Embrace The Crazy

Have you ever had a bad day? Not just any bad day, but the kind that could be turned into a movie? It might have gone something like this: after waking up late because your alarm didn’t go off, you didn’t have time to eat breakfast. So, you make your favorite quick breakfast drink. On your way to work you spilled your drink while checking your email & walking down the hallway. Then, you have a meeting but didn’t have time to go home & change. So, while attending the meeting you try to send a quick text to someone to bring you a change of clothes fast, because you need to present at another meeting. But your friend can’t help ya out. So, you head to the ladies room to clean up. As you try to clean up, you end up getting little bits of paper towel all over yourself & it looks much worse. That’s not all, though. Flourish

“Flourish: To grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.” There are a lot of observations I could take away from that definition. What stood out to me reading it today was that flourishing is the result of a favorable environment. We all are affected by our environment negatively & positively, even when we might not realize it. Some of the factors are out of our control. Others, we choose. We can choose to have a friend group that either tells us the hard truth even when it’s painful to hear, or pick ones who tells us we’re “all good” when the opposite is true. We have the ability to choose if our lives will flourish based upon what we bring into our inner circle. How will you be intentional about flourishing?
